The Considerate Constructors Scheme registered its 15000th site in January, and the occasion was marked by a celebration at the Ware headquarters.

The event was attended by members of the Scheme board, Scheme Monitors and other guests. The celebration highlights the extraordinary pace at which the Scheme has grown, and shows the continued commitment of the industry to improve its image.
The Scheme was originally set up as a result of the Latham Review, one conclusion of which had been that the image of the construction industry needed improving. The idea behind the Scheme was simple: there would be a Code of Practice that sites could sign up to, and these sites would be monitored and given advice on how to improve their image.

In July 1996 the CIOB appointed Mr Doug Goodsir as the Project Manager for the Scheme and a number of pilot sites were recruited to test its viability and to confirm the degree of management and administration required to run the initiative.

The pilot study was completed in January 1997 and, by June, agreement was given for the Scheme to be launched nationally. At this stage there was only one person monitoring the then 178 registered sites.

After running the Scheme for a year, the CIOB and CIB felt it was time to hand it over to another organisation within the industry, as was the original plan. In October 1998 an agreement was reached for the administration of the Scheme to be transferred from the CIOB to the Construction Confederation (CC) and David Hardy was appointed as General Manager.

Since then, the Scheme has experienced continuous growth, with more than 350 sites now registering every month and a team of over 80 Monitors carrying out over 500 visits a month.

The Minister for Construction, the Rt Hon Alun Michael MP, said:
‘I congratulate the Considerate Constructors Scheme on reaching the milestone of 15,000 registered sites. This impressive achievement demonstrates the significant and continued take up of this highly successful industry initiative.

It is paramount that construction companies of all sizes and types take the greatest possible care in their relationships with their workforce, the local community and the environment. The rapid growth of the Scheme shows the continued willingness of the industry to strive for positive change and proves the benefits that an improved image brings.

By winning the 2012 Olympic bid, we are in a position to show the world the huge advances our construction industry is making, not only in design and engineering excellence, but also in Corporate Social Responsibility.

I want to see all Government funded sites leading the way in best practice by signing up and committing to initiatives such as the Considerate Constructors Scheme.’
