It is encouraging that participation by construction businesses in Considerate Constructors Scheme continues to grow. The Scheme logo we see on so many site hoardings shows that the project partners care about the local community they operate in, and are committed to the Scheme’s ‘Code of Considerate Practice’.That sends a strong, positive message about the industry as a whole, and reflects a good practice approach that I would recommend to all construction businesses.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme offers construction businesses a practical way to demonstrate their Corporate Responsibility values. By adopting the Scheme’s ‘Code of Considerate Practice’, businesses show they care about their workforce and the communities they operate in, which reflects a positive image of the industry to potential recruits.

 

I would like to see all construction businesses participating in the Scheme, and seeking to match the top performers in the industry.

When a construction project is completed the impression of those who built it will remain with local people for quite some time.

By encouraging constructors to be good neighbours – reducing noise, cutting waste and keeping to sociable working hours – the Considerate Constructors Scheme makes a huge difference to people living near building sites and improves the image of the industry.

I would encourage all construction companies to sign up and champion good practice.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme is one of the great construction industry success stories. By setting standards and driving them forward, the Considerate Constructors Scheme has shown that constructors can do a good deal to project a positive image in the areas in which they work.

With work on the 2012 Olympics moving ahead, the challenge to build more affordable housing, and the race to reduce carbon emissions, construction activity will continue to be under the spotlight for many years to come.

It is a credit to the Scheme, that neighbourliness, cleanliness and environmental care are being taken seriously by more and more companies involved in construction. This has been achieved through voluntary effort, showing a real desire within the industry to improve performance.

As the Minister responsible for construction, I commend the work of Considerate Constructors Scheme, and everyone involved in driving best practice, and I would like to see all UK sites signing up.

The construction industry makes a significant contribution to the UK's GDP and has a huge impact on the environment and our daily lives. With preparation for the 2012 Olympics now underway, the eyes of the world are focused more than ever on the UK construction industry.

Construction sites act as the showcase for the industry and, to project a positive image, they must be run in a way which not only gives the highest priority to health and safety and the environment, but is sensitive to the communities in which they are located. Clean, tidy, safe and environmentally conscious sites send out a powerful and positive image of the industry to the general public and the workforce. 

The Olympics give us the ideal opportunity to showcase the huge strides our industry has made towards these aims. As Construction Minister, I want to see all government-funded sites signing up to the Considerate Constructors Scheme, or similar initiatives, and I will lead by example in encouraging ministerial colleagues to ensure that all government-sponsored sites do register.

Construction sites act as the showcase for the industry and those managing them must be sensitive to the local environment and seek to minimise any disturbance in terms of noise, dust, and dirt sometimes caused by construction sites to the immediate neighbourhood. I welcome the fact that the Considerate Constructors Scheme places health and safety as a top priority, and that it gives prominence to respect for people - in terms of those working on site, as well as local communities in which sites are located.

If we want to encourage all involved in the process to create our built environment, we must all work to ensure that sites are well managed, clean and safe. The benefits of achieving this will be twofold (i) improving the image of construction; and (ii) producing better projects in terms of cost, timeliness and quality.

Together we can build an image of construction fit for the 21st century – with reality to match the image.
