Scottish Parliamnet appoints Scheme
December 2002

The Considerate Constructors Scheme; a Government backed initiative to improve the image of construction. The Holyrood site, which will be used for parliamentary business from the end of 2003, has registered with the Scheme to provide help and guidance for their efforts in minimising any negative effect to the public and the environment.

The new Parliament building at Holyrood was conceived by Catalan architect, the late Enric Miralles, as a joint project between his practice, EMBT (Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue) and the Scottish-based RMJM. Work on the design was almost entirely completed before his untimely death in July 2000.
Building works, excluding landscaping, with an estimated cost of £294.6m is currently targeted for April 2003 completion. The EU has said it will be probably Europe's most accessible new building, ensuring full disability access as well as environmentally sustainable; already achieving excellent ratings so far by BREEAM ecological assessments.
