The Considerate Constructors Scheme is celebrating after reaching a crucial benchmark of 5,000 registered sites in only its fifth year of operation. The Scheme, developed by the Industry and supported by Government is designed to improve the image of construction.

‘Granton Waterfront’,
51a West Harbour Road,
Granton, Edinburgh,

being carried out by Farrans (Construction) Ltd with Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd, as the client, is the 5000th site to be registered since the inception of the Scheme five years ago.
The £7,500,000 contract involves the construction of two major corridors. The Spine Road will run west for West Harbour Road through the centre of the site and will finish at the site boundary with one of the site's other major landowners, Lattice Property Holdings Ltd. Lattice will complete that part of the Spine Road which is on their property. The 47-metre wide Spine Road will incorporate trams, vehicles, cycle paths, pedestrian walkways and substantial landscaping. The Spine Road will connect with The Walk which will run at a diagonal and which will provide the main services corridor for the site as well as offering major additional pedestrian and cycle access.

Brian Wilson, MP, Minister of State for Energy and Construction has given his personal backing and the support of the Government to the Scheme, by attending a special commemorative function at this 5,000th site celebration in Edinburgh on October 11th 2002.

“It seems fitting that the Considerate Constructors Scheme should reachthis key milestone at the end of National Construction Week, a campaign dedicated to attracting the 380,000 recruits that are desperately needed over the next five years. This shortfall can only be addressed if the construction industry presents itself well to school-leavers and the general public. The success of the Considerate Constructors Scheme provides visible evidence that a large number of firms do care about their image and their relationship with the communities in which they work."
David Wilson. Minister of State for Industry and Energy.

"Having reached 5000 sites over the last five years we expect to double this over the next five. The Scheme’s message to improve the image of construction is spreading with the growth in membership. We aim to expand our membership and provide even better guidance and support in the future.”
David Hardy. General manager of the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

“Farrans are pleased to have been involved in the Considerate Constructors
Scheme for several years. The encouragement that the scheme gives to the whole of the site team to be good neighbours and portray the Construction Industry in a responsible light to the Local Community is another important step towards the overall success of the Granton Regeneration Project. We are therefore especially pleased that Granton has the good fortune to be the 5,000th site and the added exposure that may bring."
Clifford Spence. civils engineering director of Farrans.

"We chose Farrans as our Managing Contractor for our major infrastructure project as they have a strong track record in the type of partnering contract we were looking for and because they were keen to align themselves with our objectives in this major investment.
It was equally important to us that the company we appointed to manage the project would act in a responsible and sensitive manner and we are obviously delighted that this contract is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme. We have a policy of encouraging best practice and of following world class standards and we feel that the Considerate Contractors Scheme is an excellent example of such approaches.

The work which Farrans is undertaking for us will open up this derelict site, eventually allowing easy access from the south of the site right through to the edge of the Firth of Forth. In addition, construction of The Spine Road and The Walk will provide access to sites which have been marketed by Waterfront Edinburgh Limited."
Councillor Lezley M Cameron. Chairman of Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme aims to achieve better management and presentation of sites, with the emphasis on improving relationships with the local community.  Its objective is to minimise any disturbance or negative impact (in terms of noise, dirt and inconvenience) sometimes caused by construction sites to the immediate neighbourhood.

“Regular users of the Scheme include local authorities, housing associations, utility companies, commercial developers and government departments as well as house builders and main construction Companies.

The Scheme is applicable to all types of construction activity, including new infrastructure, civil engineering, highways' maintenance, term contracts, commercial and residential development, public and private house building, and repair and maintenance work.
Our guidance is based on the sound business case that improving public image will result in improved company performance.”
David Hardy. General manager of the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
