Heathrow T5C

Project Name:  Heathrow T5C
Presented to:  Stephen Sebborn
Contractor:  Carillion Building
Client:  BAA

In the busy confines of Heathrow airport, this project required the construction on an ‘airside’ site of a new satellite terminal building for the Terminal Five development.

Described by the Scheme’s Monitor as “a flagship project by any standards”, this project demonstrated careful attention to detail and real innovation throughout.
Amongst the innovations were the use of an electric-powered truck to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, and a mobile temporary lighting system that proved so successful that it was adopted permanently by the airport authorities.

The site team also built excellent communications with their airline neighbours, and managed to keep the adjacent aircraft stands free of debris or obstruction and fully operational even while work was being carried out on a stand. A site waste compactor reduced associated vehicle movements by 80%, and a total recycling rate of over 91% was measured.

Extensive engagement with local schools, first-class staff welfare facilities and strong safety scores were matched by high levels of presentation throughout, making this site a worthy ambassador for the Scheme and for the construction industry.
