Most Considerate Company 2011
Rydon Maintenance - North London Region have been named as 2011’s Most Considerate Company by the Considerate Constructors Scheme in their first National Company Awards event. The company operates as part of Rydon Maintenance which is a specialist facilities management, refurbishment, and building service provider to local authorities, housing associations and NHS Trusts throughout the southern half of England.
The National Company Awards were held at the prestigious Berkeley hotel in London on the 23 November 2011, where the most considerate companies registered with the Scheme were recognised and rewarded for their efforts in improving the image of construction. There were a total of 40 awards consisting of 19 Bronze, 13 Silver and 8 Gold, as well as Rydon Maintenance - North London Region winning the top accolade of Most Considerate Company 2011.
The organisation’s work centres on providing reactive repair and maintenance services to over 7,000 dwellings throughout the North London area. Daily interaction with tenants is therefore a key part of the remit, and the Scheme’s Monitors judged the company’s considerate performance as exceptional. Great courtesy was shown towards each tenant, with operator photo identity cards on display at all times for the residents’ reassurance whilst also taking the time to discuss what the work involved. The visits themselves were often timed to help avoid school runs and other busy times, and operatives were prepared to wait if a tenant’s return was delayed.
Details such as the placing of dust sheets from the main entrance to a tenant’s flat were widely observed, as was the provision of bottled drinking water and chemical toilet facilities where supplies were to be unavoidably disrupted. The success of this comprehensive approach was evidenced by excellent tenant relations and zero housekeeping complaints being recorded across the whole company.
They also provided valuable support to local communities through free redecoration of a local community centre, repairs to a children’s playground and the staging of an art competition. Supported by high environmental standards and consistently improving site visit scores, the company was judged by Scheme Monitors to have demonstrated exceptional levels of consideration.
The Most Considerate Company Award was presented by Julia Evans, Chief Executive of the National Federation of Builders, at the event which was attended by over 120 guests.
Julia Evans said: “It’s a great pleasure to be part of the first National Company Awards event for the Considerate Constructors Scheme and to hear that considerate standards go right to the heart of so many people working in construction. I congratulate Rydon Maintenance - North London Region on their success, and indeed all the nominated companies for their superb efforts.”
The awards recognise the overall performance of registered companies against the Scheme’s Company Code of Considerate Practice, which asks all companies who register to show great care and consideration towards local neighbourhoods and the general public, the workforce and the environment. Companies are assessed and scored on their sites by one of the Scheme’s Monitors, an experienced industry professional, who is acting as an informed member of the public. The Scheme has been celebrating the successes of registered sites at the much coveted annual National Site Awards for over a decade and now registered companies have their own annual event to aspire to.
Chairman of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, Robert Biggs, added: “It has been a great pleasure to be involved in the first National Company Awards and to reward the measures that companies have put into place in order to be a more considerate constructor. This marks the start of an annual event that I imagine most companies will want to be part of.”
