Located in a busy mid-Hertfordshire town, this project required the design and traditional build of a new four-storey supermarket including the demolition of existing shop units.

The close proximity of both residential and commercial premises required active neighbour relations, and this was managed exceptionally well. An excellent visitors centre and heated viewing area were open during site hours, with direct access from the shopping centre. A children’s sand pit (with toy JCB’s) was included. One thousand five hundred visitors who gave their permission to be photographed were rewarded with the posting of their pictures on the site’s hoardings to provide real involvement. The visitor centre experience generated a lot of positive feedback, especially from children who enjoyed watching the works.

The site team also displayed a mock up of the finished vehicle entrance to the store to ensure that the client’s deliveries were made with minimum disruption. Four fire brigades made use of the site to practice their construction rescue skills, and a training day was provided that was tailored specifically for visiting students.

Excellent safety scores, coupled with a strong environmental performance, completed an impressive overall profile, and confirmed the real commitment of this site to the best in considerate construction.
