Cravenwood Community School

Cravenwood Community Primary School
Presented to: The Project Team
Contractor: GB Building Solutions Limited
Client: Manchester City Council

Bounded by housing and a large superstore, this project required the refurbishment of part of an existing school followed by the demolition and rebuild of the remainder.

Against a background of close environmental observation and excellent levels of presentation throughout, this site team set new standards for the integration of school pupils with the work in hand. Almost daily interaction occurred, and the many initiatives included the creation of a vegetable garden for children with produce split between parents and charities, the modelling of some waste land into a useable stage and amphitheatre, and the invitation to pupils to shadow a member of staff for a full day to learn about construction. Year 6 pupils were spilt into groups with mentors who guided them in the client, design, costing and project management role for the upgrading of a school courtyard.

The success of these and many other initiatives were summed up by Manchester City Council Project Manager, Keith Hayes, who said: "The way the contractor engaged with the staff and pupils of the school, the local community, local business and charities has been exceptional. The team has gone above and beyond in every aspect, from taking on apprentices to creating a working ‘Whacky Car’ with the pupils and entering it in a rally and raising £5000 for a local charity. GB Building Solutions have been simply excellent!"
