Set in the Devonport Regeneration Area, this long-term project required the construction of 159 timber framed dwellings and a Tesco Express store on former MoD land.
A full-time community engagement coordinator was in place at this site to assist the site manager in providing support for local communities. Of particular note was the financial support for deprived teenagers via a sailing scheme and the employment of homeless people that the Shekinah Mission was helping to rejoin society. Goodwill gestures included timber donated to a drop-in centre, a footpath and signs for a physiotherapy practice and help with tree planting for local scheme. Educational support included an Ivor Goodsite colouring competition, ‘Safe Play At All Times’ talks to schools, and career talks for two universities. There were also eight apprenticeship places created.
Later in the project, following a resident’s questionnaire, the team established an innovative ‘CCS Charter’ which was signed up to by subcontractors and disseminated to the workforce through tool-box talks. Similar levels of commitment were observed throughout the site, which was a credit to the aims of the Scheme.
