Client: Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd
This project required the refurbishment of an existing supermarket involving extensions on two elevations and an internal refit.
Exceptionally close attention was paid to all environmental matters at this site. A monthly sustainability report showed noise and lighting levels plus water and diesel usage, while local labour analysis showed mileage travelled by each operative. Thermal imaging was carried out on the eco cabins to monitor the heat loss, and specially-commissioned and reusable ‘low carbon’ site hoarding removed the need for excavation and concrete installation.
Community support included a trip to Legoland for 30 children with learning difficulties, and a litter pick was carried out in the local area prior to the Royal Wedding festivities. An essay prize competition with Salford College identified a new community initiative which showed the public how to operate and maintain tools, and the regular newsletters were also available in Braille and on CD.
Extensive welfare support for the workforce included a caffeine-free zone and visiting masseuse, and top scores were recorded for safety and responsibility. Throughout the site, there were valuable new initiatives mixed with very high basic standards, making it a real credit to the industry and to the aims of the Scheme.
