West Yorkshire Police Scientific Support Unit
Presented to: Stephen Hart
Contractor: Wates Construction Ltd
Client: West Yorkshire Police Authority

Adjacent to the River Calder on the outskirts of Wakefield, this project involved the construction of a three-storey scientific support building on brownfield land within a commerce park.

Attention to considerate practice detail was evident throughout every aspect of this site’s operations. Visitors to the site received text messages in advance advising on local traffic and weather conditions, while a dog water and waste station was set up at the perimeter, which adjoins land popular with dog walkers. Flood indicators and a pump were installed, outside of contract requirements, to de-water adjacent land for public benefit and arrangements have been made to maintain the site-installed badger routes, bird and bat boxes after the project is completed.

Offices and welfare facilities were of a commendable standard, in particular the canteen, which employed a local chef producing subsidised healthy food options which were also available to site neighbours. Regular exercise and cycling was encouraged, and health screening was provided for all site workers.

An excellent overall presentation coupled with a friendly yet professional atmosphere on site caused Scheme Monitor Kelvin Wigham to comment: "The whole site team, company and industry can be proud of the image projected on this site".
