Most Considerate Site 2012
McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd has been awarded the prestigious title of UK’s Most Considerate Site 2012 for their outstanding efforts on the Sainsbury's Ballymena site located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The award was presented to The Site Team by Paul Morrell OBE, the Government's Chief Construction Adviser.
Located in a busy retail park, this project called for the refurbishment of a Sainsbury's supermarket which remained operational throughout the short construction period.
Exceptional innovation, responsiveness to challenge and constant attention to detail were the hallmarks of the management approach. An MSc student was retained to study 'virtual water' in construction material production to promote sustainability more widely. The impressive results will be used UK-wide by the client and made available to other construction companies. A further unique initiative involved specially-developed ‘low carbon’ hoarding, which was both practical and attractive, and had less environmental impact from its production and placement.
First-class welfare facilities were complemented by a smoking cessation club and operatives and staff were incentivised in considerate performance. Community initiatives included the production of a free, colourful ‘Community Calendar’ containing photos of considerate initiatives, local bird-life enhancement, displays in the nearby ecos centre and practical involvement in local schools and colleges.
With top scores across the spectrum of considerate practices, the Scheme’s Monitor commented: "This short duration site showed the highest levels of partnership, community outreach, respect for people and innovation. Its outstanding performance is a tribute to the efforts of all who take part in considerate construction".
