Ivor's new workbook!

alt

Earlier this year, the Considerate Constructors Scheme announced that it would be launching its newest addition to the ever-expanding range of Ivor Goodsite products, his very own educational workbook. From the workbook’s inception and earliest design stage back in late 2011, to the recent trialling events, Ivor Goodsite’s Construction Site Safety is now ready and will be available to purchase from the 6th August 2012.

Ivor Goodsite was developed by the Considerate Constructors Scheme some eight years ago, to be used by registered sites and companies to engage with a young audience. In the Scheme’s continuous efforts to raise awareness among children of the dangers on construction sites, the Ivor Goodsite costume has been available to hire for any construction related event in an attempt to not only teach children the message of construction site safety, but also promote the UK construction industry.

Ivor has for many years had branded fun packs which he can bring with him to an event, and 2011 saw the launch of his own PPE range and the ‘Hunt the Hazard!’ site sign, which have both been a huge success. However, the Scheme is always exploring new ways to educate young people on the subject of safety, and it was suggested that a children’s workbook would be a perfect resource. To be used by teachers, site managers and parents, it allows them to show and share advice with children for their personal safety, by teaching them to respect the dangers of playing on or near a construction site.

Ivor Goodsite’s Construction Site Safety is the first product of its type which the Scheme has developed, so it was valuable to have had some assistance along the way. Working closely with the Children’s Safety Education Foundation, who also endorsed Ivor’s ‘Hunt the Hazard!’ site sign, the workbook has been designed to appeal to children, and is both informative and enjoyable.

Earlier this year, the final draft was ready to be piloted by the most brutal audience; a group of young school pupils. Two of the Scheme’s Associate Members, Willmott Dixon and Bramall Construction (part of Keepmoat Ltd), volunteered to organise events for the purposes of trialling the workbook, which took place in May 2012. Both events proved to be extremely positive, with the workbook being well-received by both the children and adults alike!

Willmott Dixon held their event at the Malpas Court Primary School in Newport with Ivor Goodsite going along for the day, where pupils enjoyed a health and safety presentation from Regional Community Engagement Manager Emma Bull. After the assembly, children from one class were thrilled to be the first to look through the pages of Ivor’s new workbook. As they flicked through the pages in excitement, it was clear the workbook was not only educational, but also great fun.

Emma Bull commented: “The Ivor workbook is an excellent way to reinforce the very important message that Ivor delivers through the assemblies, by focussing on scenarios that the children can relate to and begin to question unsafe practices and the infinite dangers on a construction site, ultimately to help to deliver the message to stay away from construction sites!”

Gillian Benson, a Teacher at Malpas Court Primary School, added: “The good thing about this workbook is that it’s colourful and accessible to all abilities. The layout inspires the children to want to complete the tasks and the boys are especially engaged by the comic strip activity. I believe it has the ‘wow’ factor that children are looking for.”

Ivor Goodsite’s Construction Site Safety contains over 20 pages of construction related stories, puzzles, and activities that revolve around the important message of staying safe. With information on construction and its meaning, and a real life example of ‘a day in the life of a site manager’, the Considerate Constructors Scheme is confident that this new initiative will help in the continual challenge of promoting safety to young people.
