C512 Whitechapel Main Station Works

2014 MCS runners upC512 Whitechapel Main Station Works

Presented to: C512 Project Team
Contractor: BBMV Joint Venture
Client: Crossrail Ltd

Surrounded by retail units, residential areas and a hospital, this project required the part demolition and refurbishment of London’s Whitechapel station and the construction of a new station building with ventilation shafts and platforms.

Neighbour consideration and energy conservation were jointly addressed by a new initiative on this extensive site. The use of LED lighting provided substantial energy savings and the employment of a generator running on rapeseed oil prevented the usual diesel noise and smell from contaminating the local environment. Among the many community support initiatives noted by the Scheme Monitor were the special arrangements and help afforded to a neighbour requiring removal lorry access, the compensation provided for any temporary loss of parking, the involvement of local schools and the arrangement of alternative accommodation where night working might generate disturbance. These efforts were underpinned by the holding of a residents’ barbecue and a strong neighbour communications programme which included more than twenty-five meetings in just one year.

These elements were supported by first class staff welfare commitment and support which ranged from medical care to the establishment of a site football club. Despite running an extensive site in a densely populated area, this project created a friendly yet professional image which fully supported the aims of the Scheme.
