Contractor: Carillion plc
Client: Highways Agency

This project in West Sussex required the widening and straightening of some 1.8 kilometres of the A23, together with the construction of new service roads and roundabouts and with extensive landscaping along the route.

Local interest in the project was addressed very successfully through excellent dialogue and interaction with all site neighbours. Backed by a website, personal letters, newsletters and local press coverage, the site also organised a large number of site tours for children, residential groups and local businesses. Particular attention was paid to local school support and emphasising the importance of safety. Other local support activities included the undertaking of ground works and landscaping for a fishery adjoining the site.

Summarising the considerate performance, the visiting Scheme Monitor noted: "This is an exemplary site which is professionally managed and presented to an extremely high standard".
