In Penarth, Wales, this project was for the phased construction of a new ‘Learning Community’, uniting four schools on to one site.

The highlight of this site’s considerate performance was the innovative integration of school pupils into every aspect of the work, giving a real sense of project ownership. Twelve children of varying ages were chosen from across the four schools and appointed as ‘Construction Ambassadors’. They were given regular progress updates, attended site visits, and then presented the information back to their fellow pupils. To help them deliver this, each was given training in presentation skills. In later stages, these roles were developed further with head-cam walk-throughs being presented back to fellow pupils and pupil attendance at the project topping-out ceremony. Meanwhile, time lapse photos were also taken to enable the Learning Community to have a permanent record of the construction process.

Other school support elements included descriptive writing exercises, the installation of bird boxes and feeders, the creation of insect habitats and the donation of materials for further environmental projects.

This site set exemplar standards in considerate practices and will leave a lasting positive impression of construction.
