Phase 1 - Fulston Manor School

2014 MCS runners upPhase 1 - Fulston Manor School
Presented to: Stephen Paine and David McPherson
Contractor: Morgan Sindall plc
Client: Fulston Manor School

Situated within the grounds of Fulston Manor School in a residential area of Sittingbourne, Kent, this project comprises the construction of a new teaching block and some refurbishment to an existing school building.

To ensure safe site evacuation, and avoid damaging or moving emergency signs as work progressed, this site team chose the innovative route of stencilling directions direct onto the concrete floors. The holding of a ‘Big Switch Off’ event indentified a number of energy-saving opportunities and subsequently led to very significant reductions in energy usage. A particularly high proportion of the trade contractors were sourced locally and all were required to provide apprenticeships.

These features were matched by exceptional cleanliness and presentation, including an impressive entrance path and visitor welcome area. School students were involved in newsletter artwork and environmental issues, and curriculum support was provided across a range of subjects.

Despite being of relatively small scale, this site team showed an extraordinarily high commitment to considerate practices at every stage and showed what may be achieved with minimal resources.
