Presented to: C315 Connaught Tunnel Site Team
Contractor: Taylor Woodrow
Client: Crossrail Ltd
This project required the refurbishment of the derelict Victorian Connaught Tunnel which runs between the Victoria and Albert docks in central London.
Innovations at this extensive site included the trialling of an ultra low-carbon concrete to significantly improve environmental performance. Further environmental safeguards included the use of diesel particulate filters to lessen the impact of older engines, and the special training of operatives to correctly divert groundwater without contaminating existing docks.
Excellent presentation and public safeguards were enhanced by the retention of a walkway bridge across the site to avoid a long walk around while a viewing platform enabled inspection of the work in progress. Other community initiatives included the provision of a pensioners’ Christmas lunch, the holding of a fundraising ‘bring and share lunch’ and managers spending time as ‘book buddies’ with the nearby Drew Primary School.
With first class welfare facilities, including an on-site nurse and biometric health checks for all workers, this site gave an excellent considerate performance in every possible area.
