This 98-hectare site near Chesterfield requires the decontamination of a former coke works, which has been described as one of the most polluted sites in Europe.

This site matched the overall environmental objective of the work with a wide range of their own initiatives. These included distributing winter feed to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s rare breeds, constructing a duck tunnel under a haul road, creating a snake habitat, establishing a kingfisher nesting zone and a new badger set.

Extensive community involvement included talks given to schools about the site and the construction industry in general, while senior managers gave presentations to local university students.

Above all, this is a project of intense local interest which will leave a valuable legacy in the area. This site team’s performance evidences their recognition of the important role they have played, and their real commitment to the community’s best interests in all aspects of the work.
