A46 Newark to Widmerpool Improvement Scheme

2013-MCS-runners-upA46 Newark to Widmerpool Improvement Scheme
Presented to: The A46 Project Team
Contractor: Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering
Client: Highways Agency

This four year project saw the final construction phases of the new 28 kilometre dual carriageway on the line of the existing A46 road with eight interchanges, 22 major structures, and traffic flows maintained throughout.

In the Scheme Monitor's report, he noted: "The most significant aspect of the project was how little impact it had on the community". Also noted was the fact that 23 parish councils expressed their appreciation for the straightforward and genuine way in which information was issued. These standards were achieved by exceptional dedication to a communications programme and the detailed observation of considerate site practices at every level. The needs of all those likely to be affected by the works, including road users, businesses, property owners, residential communities and individual residents, were constantly reviewed and contact constantly maintained. In this way, potential problems were addressed well in advance and satisfactory solutions identified.

Respect for the environment and ecology was equally outstanding in its detail, with sustainability planning and delivery recognised as 'exemplary' by the Highways Agency. Zero Harm targets were pursued at every opportunity, 100% landfill avoidance achieved, and measures to reduce carbon included efficient driving and muck shifting, on site tarmac batching and the employment of water harvesting, wind and solar power.

These and other considerate aspects produced a site of which the industry can be extremely proud.
