Southmead Hospital Redevelopment Project

2013-MCS-runners-upSouthmead Hospital Redevelopment Project
Presented to: The Project Team
Contractor: Carillion Construction Ltd
Client: North Bristol NHS Trust

Surrounded predominately by residential properties and a few local shops, this project comprised the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of a new £450M hospital in its place.

This large site successfully encouraged the employment of local labour by establishing a Job Centre Plus on the site, which will continue after completion to help staff with the new hospital. Over 100 bike racks were made available to the 800-strong workforce, and welfare facilities were accessible for all abilities. At the same time, help was provided to those with literacy issues and full health records were kept on site. The site team also took a proactive attitude towards community fund raising, and to date, over £32,000 and 511 man hours have been given to charitable causes.

Over 40% of procured new materials were from recycled sources and the site also scored highly on waste recycling. The introduction of service void collars added to top score safety standards, and with excellent overall presentation and road cleanliness, the site represented a first-class example of considerate construction in practice.
