Contractor: Costain Ltd
Client: Highways Agency

This project required the internal and external strengthening of the box girders supporting a viaduct, carrying traffic from the M53.

The use of actors to highlight site hazards and risks was just one of many innovations on this busy site. Each category of considerate construction was managed by a separate working group, with a policy of continual improvement. An advanced new design solution for half-joints enabled construction to proceed with no lane closures, while a solvent extractor removed paint fumes from working areas. This was complemented by an on-site plastics baler, the use of enviro-kerbs, solar-powered signage and the recycling of cooking oil into diesel. The sponsorship of three local allotments was further supported by a produce buy-back scheme.

Excellent staff welfare facilities included access for all abilities, and a free winter check was provided for all staff vehicles. Numerous fundraising activities were also in place, and the clean hoardings and tidy presentation combined to give an excellent impression to the many members of the public passing the site.
