The Marine Building

2013-MCS-runners-upThe Marine Building
Presented to: The Project Team
Contractor: Leadbitter Group
Client: University of Plymouth

Bordered by a university, shops and businesses in Plymouth city centre, this project involved the design and build of a virtual reality sea wave simulator and further research tanks.

From the commencement of works, the site team suggested access to the project as a "live learning tool" for the many construction students who are studying in Plymouth. A series of seminars including 'Planning & Procurement' and 'Keeping to Budget' were provided with expert speakers from industry and the university. Live ongoing project information was broadcast on five large screens throughout the campus, and students were allowed to use an intranet to view project documentation. Great emphasis was also placed on the Women in Technology Network by hosting meetings for non-university female engineering and technology students, while Careers in Construction talks were given to female students from Launceston College and Ridgeway School.

A first class relationship existed between the site and its neighbours, and a planting scheme was commissioned for endangered local plants and trees including Plymouth Pear and Deptford. Supported by excellent welfare facilities and good presentation, this site received well-deserved high scores in all areas of its operations.
