This construction of a new supermarket with parking on the town outskirts, involved the demolition of old warehouses, light industrial and manufacturing units and major service diversions.

A central objective was to create a positive impression with the immediate community. Over 50% of the workforce was recruited locally while a site drop-in centre provided opportunities to meet and discuss work openings. Advice for the long term unemployed and on apprenticeships was also provided. The entire project team also contributed to the refurbishment and refit of the local community centre.

High targets for the reduction of waste and energy usage in all areas were set, achieving 99.8% diversion of waste from landfill. An exceptional environmental checklist saw demolition materials segregated and salvaged for use as piling mats and filling, and a 'bug hotel' was developed at the nearby primary school to help students study nature.

Throughout the entire site, every consideration was given to reducing or eliminating the impact of the construction process on residents, the wider community and the environment, and this was achieved to an exceptional standard.
