on being a ‘good neighbour’ and
best practice plans put in place.
The Project Manager David Martin
and Site Manager Vik Turner have
won two National Site Awards
on previous projects, and set
themselves a goal of achieving a
Gold Award for United House at
Grange Walk by striving to achieve
excellence across all the Scheme’s
disciplines. Using previous
knowledge, experience and the
benefit of Vik sitting on United
Houses’ CSR and CCS steering
groups, as well as David sitting on
United Houses’ H&S Consultation
Group, many initiatives were
implemented and the site was
recognised and rewarded with a
2014 Considerate Constructors
Scheme Gold Award, in a
celebratory year of United House’s
50th Anniversary and 5 years as a
Considerate Constructors Scheme
Associate Member.
SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE
PROJECT, WHAT CHALLENGES
HAVE YOU FACED?
Key challenges we faced were six
months of demolition involving
significant temporary works and
permanent party wall structural
support works against a large
occupied residential block and
a primary UKPN substation.
Controlling dust, noise and
vibrations during demolition was
essential, and particular emphasis
was set due to operating within a
built up residential area and the
adjoining primary substation.
HOW HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO
OVERCOME THESE?
Close coordination with all parties,
letter drops, resident’s notices
and updating our residents’
website to keep all our neighbours
regularly informed of all site
activities. We set up an ‘Are we a
Good Neighbour?’ post box for
our neighbours to provide any
feedback or concerns they had.
We invested in a ‘Dust Boss’ to
assist in minimising the nuisance
caused by dust generated from site
demolition activities. The ‘Dust Boss’
provides better dust suppression
than traditional methods as it uses
a high pressure misting system
to create an ultra fine mist that
attracts dust and drives it to the
ground. ‘Dust Boss’ uses less water
than traditional methods which
were essential during the droughts
combined with United House’s
awareness to use water saving
technologies wherever practicable.
