SCHEME NEWS

18

December 2015

Issue 39

discussing, understanding and

abiding by the RAMS.

• ‘Visible first aiders’ has been

added to question 4.6, as all

sites should have identifiable

first aiders.

• ‘Defibrillators’ has been added

as a prompt to question 4.6 to

encourage the adoption of this

often vital safety kit.

• ‘FORS/CLOCS’ has been added

to question 4.7 to highlight

the Scheme’s support for this

initiative and to encourage

participation.

• ‘Cycle safety’ has been added

to question 4.7 to explicitly

highlight the need for sites to

consider and address this issue.

• ‘Identification of near misses’

has been added as a prompt

to question 4.8, as this is a vital

part of the process and sites

should have something in

place to encourage and prompt

anyone on site to identify and

report near misses.

Value their

Workforce

• The prompts ‘open door policy’,

‘recognition’, ‘feedback’ and

‘consultation’ have all been

moved from question 5.10

to 5.1 as all sites should be

addressing these requirements

as part of their work to

demonstrate a commitment

to respect, fair treatment,

encouragement and support.

As a matter of compliance,

all sites should have an open

door policy and on all but the

smallest sites there should

be an alternative way for

operatives to provide feedback

if they do not wish to approach

the site manager directly or

wish to provide feedback

anonymously. The latter might

include a suggestion box,

anonymous surveys or the

provision of a confidential

reporting telephone line.

• ‘Posters’ and ‘healthy lifestyle

advice’ have been moved from

question 5.7 to question 5.3,

as all sites should be providing

some level of guidance and

support for their workforce and

this is easily achieved.

• ‘Cleaning regime’ has been

moved from 5.9 to 5.4 to reflect

the need for all sites to have

some form of cleaning regime

in place to ensure that facilities

remain clean and hygienic.

• Question 5.5 has been

amended to include reference

to the legitimacy of the

workforce to address issues

such as illegal workers.

• ‘Illegal workers’ has been

added as a prompt to the

amended question 5.5, as all

sites should consider how they

ensure that everyone working

on their site is legally able to

do so. ‘Spot checks’ has also

been added as a prompt to

question 5.5 to encourage sites

to consider how they might

ensure that those working

onsite are legitimate and hold

the appropriate records of

competency.

• ‘Campaigns’ has been added

as a prompt to question 5.6 to

encourage registered sites to

get involved with established

industry campaigns or internal

company campaigns which

may be in place, e.g. Go

Construct, Born to Build, etc. It

is hoped that the introduction

of this prompt will drive

people towards a coordinated

approach to tackling this

industry issue.

• ‘Stress’ has been added to

question 5.7 to specifically

highlight this issue which is

acknowledged as a major

concern within the construction

industry.

• ‘E-smoking’ has been added as

a new prompt to question 5.7.

This is to highlight the need

for sites to consider providing

different facilities for e-smokers

who are looking to give up

smoking rather than making

them share with tobacco

smokers.

• ‘Health screening’ has been

added to question 5.7 – this

could also have been visiting

nurse, onsite clinic, health

checks or similar. This is to

reflect the fact that an excellent

site should be aiming to

provide such support.

• ‘Separate changing rooms’

in 5.8 has been amended to

‘separate facilities’ to reflect

the need for sites to consider
