SCHEME NEWS

Being launched in early 2016, the Scheme’s Building Social Value initiative is already

gaining positive industry-wide support.

Building Social Value allows

sites and companies registered

with the Scheme to be reviewed

against their social value targets

by an independent third party

organisation, with a report

produced which can be shared with

the public and client(s).

Developed by the Scheme in

conjunction with a number of

leading UK construction companies

and industry clients, Building Social

Value was introduced to reflect the

requirements of the Public Service

(Social Value) Act 2012.

Although the term ‘social value’ has

been around for a long time, the

Act placed a formal requirement on

public body sector organisations

to consider the economic, social

and environmental benefits for

communities when awarding

contracts.

While social value is firmly

embedded within many

construction companies, the need

to define, measure and report these

outcomes can be challenging and

that’s where Building Social Value

comes in.

The Scheme is delighted that

although the service will not be

available to book until January

2016, key industry figures have

already voiced their support.

All registered sites and companies

will be notified once the Building

Social Value initiative has been

launched.

More information will be available

via the Scheme’s website in

January.

For both public sector and, increasingly, private sector clients, there is a growing need

for us, as a major contractor, to demonstrate the delivery of social value in tangible

and measurable terms. Therefore Kier has been proactive in developing the new

Considerate Constructors Scheme’s ‘Building Social Value’ assessment process by

piloting and refining the Checklist on several of our live projects, in order to test the

practical viability of this important new measurement tool for both contractors and

clients alike.
