Babbage Building (New Engineering Design Facility), University of Plymouth

BAM Construction Ltd - Western

Construction Project Overview

This project involved refurbishing and building a new Engineering and Design Facility for the University of Plymouth. BAM Construction Ltd has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The project team has received praise for working collaboratively with the local community over 2023, demonstrating a positive impact on workforce wellbeing, and prioritising the surrounding environment.

Project Highlights

From a visual perspective, the site cabins and offices presented a professional image, and the site hoarding displayed vibrant graphics used by the university. Effective communication existed between the site and the university, given the project’s location within the campus. The site actively participated in the wider community through Building Plymouth and The Mission Mammoth arts project programmes. All operational energy usage was monitored and assessed, and results were shared with the university. Waste was carefully separated, and recycling results were championed. The company clearly outlined sustainability expectations for its supply chain, furthering its net-zero strategy. The group’s core 10 safety rules were consistently enforced through various means, including training and audits. Regular health screenings were provided for the entire workforce, encouraging proactive health and wellbeing. The workplace was attractive to both staff and workers, with excellent facilities and welfare support.

Innovations & Best Practices

The project team also enhanced construction workflows by introducing the innovative Solo Gyps Attachment electric lifting system. This innovative solution streamlined the lifting and movement of panels, simplified ceiling installation, and allowed for single-person operation while reducing the risk of injuries.

Respecting the Community

The site team demonstrated that robust engagement practices were in place on the project.  The ‘Building Plymouth’ programme (as set up by Plymouth City

Council) promoted construction as a career for young people, and has been fully supported by site teams. The team have excelled at undertaking numerous measures and events that support the community, and its participation with The Mission Mammoth initiative has been particularly impressive, involving a large number of companies and schools in the area, and the active involvement of site team staff.

Caring for the Environment

The site also demonstrated numerous measures to monitor energy usage and waste recycling, aligned with the group’s net-zero policy. This includes a sustainability policy targeting the supply chain. Energy usage from haulage, deliveries, and workforce travel is tracked. Utilising PV installation power for the build ahead of practical completion is an excellent initiative.

Valuing the Workforce

The welfare facilities were consistently maintained to a high standard, and health screenings remained available to the entire workforce. The site offered comprehensive, modern facilities and adopted a proactive approach to flexible working. The site team safeguarded workforce competency and legitimacy by working exclusively with supply chain companies holding Construction Line Gold status, ensuring rigorous background checks. A social impact tracker directly informed training programmes and staff initiatives.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
