Balfour Beatty Power, Transmission & Distribution, Viking Link for the initiative P1 – an inclusive working environment

In an industry first collaboration, National Grid, Balfour Beatty, Autism Unravelled and Sunbelt came together to champion greater awareness of the daily challenges of neurodivergent people at Viking Link’s primary compound (P1). The pilot project aims to improve working environments through improvements such as dimmable lighting, a calming colour palette and installing acoustic barriers to minimise sound transference. At its interactive opening event, visitors were able to fully immerse themselves in the environment, comparing a neurotypical to a neurodiverse room. Placing a spotlight on this ‘hidden disability’, the pilot project has created a blueprint for the mobilisation of future temporary compounds and has successfully demonstrated the struggles faced by neurodivergent individuals and how a few changes can make a huge difference in their working environment.
