City Square House Leeds

McAleer & Rushe Contracts UK Ltd

Construction Project Overview

The City Square House development in Leeds involved the construction of a 12-storey office building with three basement levels, produced on a brownfield site in a high-traffic area of the city centre. McAleer & Rushe Contracts has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The site’s central location, adjacent to Leeds Central railway station and neighbouring commercial businesses, presents unique logistical challenges. Nonetheless, the site team has demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in environmental stewardship, workforce wellbeing and community engagement, in line with the Scheme’s core goals.

Project Highlights

The site team has consistently maintained excellent compliance with the Code of Considerate Practice. Social value targets were met, and they adhered closely to community engagement plans. On numerous site visits, the team’s passion and commitment to company values were clearly evident. They fully embraced the company’s ambitious carbon reduction plans, evident in their meticulous tracking of environmental performance metrics and the project’s numerous sustainable design features. Proactive in identifying and managing environmental risks, they worked diligently within the framework of the company’s rigorous procedures.

Innovations and Best Practices

The project team excelled in delivering best practices. Their focus on employee wellbeing was underscored by the “Bringing our whole self to work” campaign, where staff shared interests, fostering open communication and team bonding. The commitment to low-carbon construction was clear through the project’s sustainable design elements, tracking embodied carbon metrics, and the use of materials with verified EPDs.

Respecting the Community

The site team ensured minimal disruption to neighbours and wider community, demonstrating excellent compliance with the Code of Considerate Practice. Examples of their community focus included informative hoardings, a complaints/compliments system, charity events, and supporting a local farm charity.

Caring for the Environment

The site team consistently strove to minimise their environmental footprint. The development featured rooftop gardens, planters, and bird boxes to support the local ecosystem. They proactively improved drainage beyond the immediate work area and collaborated with the landlord on tree and flower planting initiatives. Rigorous environmental impact assessments were a standard part of their practice, alongside a comprehensive set of plans to reduce carbon emissions, pollution and waste.

Valuing the Workforce

The site team has also created a supportive, inclusive, and healthy workplace. Initiatives included hazard-spotting programmes, mental health awareness campaigns, and flexible working options. The daily provision of free fruit for workers further demonstrated their commitment to wellbeing.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
