Dogpool Lane

GMI Construction Group

Construction Project Overview

The Birmingham-based project Dogpool Lane by GMI Construction involves the design, construction, and defect rectification of a 167-bed student accommodation block. It also includes the creation of a student hub, leisure areas, retail space, services, landscaping, drainage, and external works. GMI Construction has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The project team’s considerate approach has been outstanding throughout 2023, demonstrating a strong commitment to the community, the local environment and the workforce.

Project Highlights

The project prioritised community engagement through various initiatives. The main site hoarding creatively showcased community projects, while the loading bay doubled as a safe viewing area for local schoolchildren. Project information was shared via an interactive notice board. Additionally, the project supported local charities and organisations and promoted the construction industry through collaborations with local colleges. The team achieved a notable 30.3% of contract value in social initiatives. Environmental stewardship was evident through waste reduction and recycling efforts, alongside a focus on workforce wellbeing.

Innovations & Best Practices

The project team stood out for implementing 3 CCS-approved best practices on-site. They introduced Daniel Baird Foundation (DBF) Bleed Kits, promoting safety and addressing knife crime. They also partnered with the Lighthouse Club Charity to deliver mental health awareness sessions and support. Additionally, a high-visibility mental health display highlighted industry concerns and resources.

Respecting the Community

Residents received proactive communications before construction started and throughout key stages of the process. The project prioritised local employment and integrated Considerate Constructors Scheme information within inductions and site displays. 24/7 emergency contact information was visible, the loading bay’s dual use for school visits was commendable, and a publicly accessible Bleed Kit demonstrated responsiveness.

Caring for the Environment

The contractor adhered to environmental policies and held health and safety certifications. They operated with an environmental management plan, waste management plan, and an environmental aspects and impacts assessment, with regular audits in place. The project prioritised waste reduction and promoted the reuse and recycling of wood, paint, and other resources.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
