Fife College: Dunfermline Learning Campus

Balfour Beatty

Construction Project Overview

This project involves the construction of the new Fife College in Scotland, consisting of 3 linked buildings to provide a teaching block, engineering block and sports block. The works include a significant area of hard and soft landscaping, forming public realm spaces and parking, linking to the existing community and the other areas of the campus. Balfour Beatty has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project over the course of 2023. Thanks to the team’s dedication to excellence, the project has delivered numerous positive environmental, workforce and community-focused benefits.

Project Highlights

The project team has excelled in creating a positive first impression, with well-presented hoardings, clear signage, and readily accessible community information. They consistently prioritise keeping the college and surrounding community informed on project progress. Exceptional levels of community engagement, public safety, promotion of careers in construction, and support of local businesses and charities further underscore the project’s values. Environmental practices are top-notch, with a focus on energy-efficient accommodations and efforts to reduce carbon and achieve NetZero shared throughout the community and supply chain. The project team demonstrably prioritises the safety and well-being of the workforce, providing first-class welfare facilities.

Innovations & Best Practices

The project team has also stood out for its commitment to best practices to improve on-site performance. The team introduced a structural solution to reduce embodied carbon in structural frames, along with increasing workforce engagement by implementing a live digital feedback system for on-site safety observations. They also partnered with the Lighthouse Charity to promote the ‘Making it Visible’ construction mental health campaign, with great success.

Respecting the Community

The project strongly also emphasised engagement with the community and local educational institutions, a commitment that will continue throughout construction. The team actively promoted careers in the industry and supports local charities. As evidence of their success in these areas, the Community Engagement Hub in the existing college enjoys frequent use.

Caring for the Environment

Environmental procedures on-site consistently reflected industry best practices with top-quality, energy-efficient accommodations provided. The company and the project as a whole have a distinguished environmental track record, which is actively promoted to the workforce, the supply chain, and the community. Robust environmental management procedures further solidify this commitment.

Valuing the Workforce

The project also demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the safety and well-being of the workforce. The team provides excellent welfare facilities, and digital screens placed within the on-site accommodations display initiatives and campaigns designed to engage the workforce. These range from safety campaigns and daily updates to information on various health and wellbeing resources.
