GREATWORTH TO SOUTHAM

EKFB

Construction Project Overview

EKFB Joint Venture has excelled in delivering high-quality work throughout the construction of a 25km section of the HS2 transport route. The project includes the construction of tunnels and embankments, spanning a rural expanse of towns and villages. EKFB Joint Venture has been awarded a Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The team has carefully considered the impact of construction, working positively with affected stakeholders.

Project Highlights

The project has delivered an outstanding level of scheme compliance, with many standards now embedded as usual practice for site staff. The goal was to perform every task at the industry’s highest standard, with delivery teams dedicated to achieving excellence. The project’s outreach to local communities and schools was noteworthy, with several examples of success in this area. The teams were committed to leaving a positive lasting legacy and promoting the value of the construction industry to the local area.

Innovations and Best Practices

The project team’s innovative approach incorporated 2 CCS-approved best practices; the pioneering digital DIGGER earthworks platform, which optimised machinery use for less fuel consumption; and Trimble AR and Site Vision excavators which improved on-site precision and spatial understanding. Trimble Earthworks is an AR system that supports operators to accurately position the bucket, dig depth and gradient during complex earthworks.

Respecting the Community

The project fostered open communication with the local community through dedicated team effort and passion, which also helped build strong relationships. There were excellent initiatives in place for educating residents, especially school children, about the value of construction careers.

Caring for the Environment

The site’s environmental management has been exceptional, with dedicated monitoring that stood out as a major success. Aware of public interest in environmental impact, the project had extensive policies and measures in place. Furthermore, the environmental team proactively engaged with local residents to educate and mitigate project impacts. A highlight of their efforts was the community tree-planting initiative.

Valuing the Workforce

There was a clear recognition that the workforce were essential for safe and successful project completion. Robust procedures assessed worker competency, and there was an outstanding support network addressing physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Additionally, the project brilliantly supported those working away from home, by providing access to a GP, demonstrating a proactive focus on workforce wellness.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
