Kincardine Bridge SPV Replacement

Balfour Beatty

Construction Project Overview

The project involves the replacement of an 80-meter-long viaduct at the southern end of a bridge across the River Forth at Kincardine in Scotland. The scope includes working platforms, a temporary bridge to maintain traffic flow, demolition and reconstruction of the existing viaduct, pedestrian safety upgrades, and environmental mitigation measures. Balfour Beatty has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023.

Project Highlights

Throughout 2023, the site has showcased a professional external image with appropriate signage. Facilities were secured by well-maintained timber hoarding and fencing, and monitored with a CCTV system. Access was controlled via turnstiles using facial recognition to ensure security, and ample on-site parking was present. The project engaged the community through school visits and a CSR policy focusing on charities and local organisations. KPIs were in place. The company held several accreditations for environmental, occupational health and quality management, and actively worked towards a net-zero target with subcontractors. Scheme information was also displayed prominently on the on-site notice board.

Innovations & Best Practices

Site teams have also been remarkable in accomplishing 2 CCS-approved innovations and 2 best practices on-site to drive higher performance. The team used an innovative battery-powered power station to replace traditionally polluting petrol generators, while also introducing the EcoNet power management system, a cloud-based energy and power management system that reduced the baseline power supply required, saving cost, fuel, and carbon emissions in the process. For best practices, the site used the Harness On system to ensure that operatives were connected to an approved anchor point when operating elevating work platforms, and teams also used a satellite-based Starlink system to provide high-speed, low-latency site broadband services.

Respecting the Community

Professional project management and careful delivery procedures have minimised disruptions to local traffic. Security measures were thorough, and the site manager proactively engaged with local schools and organisations for community support. The site maintained excellent health, safety, and traffic management plans.

Caring for the Environment

The site team has adhered to strict environmental guidelines, aligning with the Scheme‚Äôs checklist and the company’s environmental management accreditation. Ecological surveys and inspections were regularly conducted, and environmental awareness was a priority during inductions and toolbox talks. Facilities prioritised sustainability, while environmental targets were actively displayed and pursued. The project utilised new, efficient generators and supported a company-wide focus on carbon reduction, including the use of an electric car fleet.

Valuing the Workforce

The site also demonstrated a strong commitment to workforce wellbeing with pristine facilities and robust health, safety, and traffic procedures in place. Access was strictly controlled, and a protected pedestrian route was maintained. The project actively promoted both physical and mental health initiatives for a supportive work environment.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
