Pioneering the future of energy conservation and carbon reduction in construction, Laing O’Rourke implemented a series of practices to mitigate rising carbon emissions at the Olympia redevelopment project. Having limited mains supply and cranes reliant on diesel generators, it was evident within the first year that carbon emissions were increasing and air quality was deteriorating. So Laing O’Rourke turned to innovative new low-carbon practices to support its environmental commitments. Its approach included: Punch Flybrid advanced Flywheel energy storage devices saving up to 83% of diesel; installing the UK’s first electric crawler cranes; switching diesel to HVO saving 90% in carbon; and the first deployment of Ampd Enertainer batteries outside of Asia, enabling the move away from generators to electric power with lower demands on the mains supply.
