North Tynside Transport Interchange

Willmott Dixon Construction North

Construction Project Overview

This project focuses on the construction of a central Transport Interchange at North Shields, connecting vital transport networks. Additionally, the project will create a pedestrian path down a steep embankment leading to the popular tourist attraction, River Quayside. Willmott Dixon Construction North has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The site team has taken great pride in their meticulous work practices and has been fully committed to the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

Project Highlights

Throughout 2023, the site team focused heavily on community engagement, maintaining positive communication with neighbours and stakeholders. Their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility was commendable, setting aside workdays for direct community benefit. Environmental responsibility was also paramount, with specialised consultants addressing ecological issues and a rigorous carbon reduction programme in place. The team actively worked to address local workforce needs while promoting new opportunities.

Innovations & Best Practices

The project team also excelled in implementing environmentally-focused best practices on-site to improve performance. They introduced best-practice plant-based cleaning products to reduce plastic waste and the site’s carbon footprint. Additionally, they signed up for the best practice Pallet LOOP Charter to minimise pallet waste and partnered with community wood recycling programmes too. These actions demonstrated the team’s commitment to sustainable construction practices that helped to minimise environmental waste.

Respecting the Community

The commitment to positive community relations has been commendable across both the transport hub and embankment areas at the site. Communication with the community was open and regular, including newsletters, meetings, and clear informational signage around the sites. The project reflected a clear Corporate Social Responsibility plan, including employee volunteering within the community.

Caring for the Environment

The site team has placed a strong emphasis on environmental concerns. They held an environmental management accreditation and utilised detailed planning to safeguard the environment, including input from expert consultants. The company actively worked to reduce its carbon footprint, including implementing a supply chain charter that focused on environmental goals. The completed project improved the connectivity of the town, linking bus, metro rail and ferry services. Careful planning ensured that the new development along the embankment complemented and enhanced the existing environment.

Valuing the Workforce

The commitment to the workforce has been a high priority for this project. Onsite facilities were kept in excellent condition with attention paid to the needs of all team members. Mental health awareness training and well-being programmes were readily available. The Wilmott Dixon Home University platform provided access to e-learning, and company ambassadors actively promoted the construction industry as a whole. Flexible working practices were valued, reflected in their ‘Early Leave Days’ policy.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
