Construction Project Overview

Championing best practice and innovation during phase 2 of the NTT LON1 data centre development, Laing O’Rourke has been honoured with a Gold and Most Considerate Site award for setting exceptionally high standards across all three pillars of the Code of Considerate Practice. The data centre, commissioned by NTT Global Data Centres, is located in Dagenham and is part of the London East Business and Technical Park.

The site team have implemented impressive ISO 14001-certified environmental procedures, accelerating its path to net zero carbon with initiatives including regular risk assessments, training and toolbox talks, timely inspections, monthly reporting on waste and the development of an environmental emergency plan. Prioritising safety and welfare, the company has scored top marks for providing extremely high standards of support for its workforce, with stringent ISO 45001-certified health and safety procedures, thorough briefings and meticulous safety inspections in place.

The site team also excelled by becoming a beacon of innovation and construction best practice, introducing 1 innovation to improve heavy-lifting processes and 3 best practices to support biodiversity, reduce fuel consumption and improve visual on-site modelling.

Respecting the Community

Praised for its excellent communication, Laing O’Rourke has delivered outstanding support in the community by connecting with key stakeholders, including the business park and local authority. Going above and beyond the project scope, the team have developed an exceptional social sustainability plan that prioritises local stakeholders.

The site itself has been well considered with very high standards of site accommodation and security, including turnstile-controlled workforce entry, fencing featuring vibration-triggered CCTV, and a traffic marshall to manage vehicle access.

Caring for the Environment

Accelerating its path to net zero carbon, the company has implemented impressive ISO 14001-certified environmental procedures, including: regular risk assessments; training and toolbox talks; timely inspections; monthly reporting on waste; and the development of an environmental emergency plan.

The team have excelled in reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, saving up to 40-50% of fuel consumption with the implementation of a Flybrid generator, as well as the introduction of HVO fuel to replace diesel generators. Furthermore, vehicle idling is not permitted onsite.

Impressed by its commitment to enhance local biodiversity, the company has set ambitious targets beyond its contractual requirements too, installing x2 beehives and supporting extensive planting.

Valuing the Workforce

Prioritising safety and welfare, Laing O’Rourke scored top marks for providing extremely high standards of support for its workforce, with stringent ISO 45001-certified health and safety procedures, thorough briefings and meticulous safety inspections in place.

Innovation and best practice play a key role throughout, including; investment in an app to quickly and anonymously report near misses and make suggestions; the implementation of heavy lifting technology to reduce the risk of injury, such as the C- hook with equaliser to lift heavy prefabricated modules and the introduction of Trimble Vision, a visualisation and data sharing software tool to improve onsite efficiency and safety.

Respect, fairness and equality remained at the forefront, with a workforce-fair treatment policy and code of conduct, comprehensive training and development plans for all staff, monthly health checks and workforce recognition events.
