Royal Arsenal Phase 9-11 “A Blocks”

Berkeley Homes

Construction Project Overview

This project in Royal Arsenal near the River Thames is an extensive residential development that sits in the heart of central London. The project contains 6 residential blocks and includes building and wider landscaping processes. Berkeley Homes has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The project has been an exemplary example of considerate construction practice thanks to the dedication of the team towards the Scheme’s goals. The team has delivered numerous positive community, environmental and workforce-focused benefits as a result.

Project Highlights

High standards of excellence have been maintained throughout 2023 as this project has progressed. Community and school engagement has been impressive, with several positive social value projects taking place over the period, along with community-focused promotions of these achievements. Environmental management and procedures have also led the way, with the site team’s approach to carbon reduction and the target to be carbon-neutral being particularly commendable. Workforce welfare standards have also been high, with proactive work taking place with disadvantaged groups and young people with learning disabilities, along with construction internships being arranged for young people. Overall, the site has robust procedures and processes in place to ensure that work carried out on-site is to a high standard.

Innovations & Best Practices

The site team has also gone above and beyond by embracing 4 best practices on-site to take standards further. The team introduced a hydraulic manhole lifter to eliminate manual handling and reduce injury risk for staff, while also introducing upgraded systems to assist with on-site concrete pouring. The team also implemented new systems to support glass replacement, while also introducing upgraded temporary fire doors that offer superior fire protection and sustainability credentials compared to traditional timber fire door methods.

Respecting the Community

The team’s commitment to community and education was also outstanding. Their engagement efforts supported local Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency (GDCA) initiatives such as pop-ups, farmers markets, and music festivals. The team also enhanced local spaces with outdoor garden pods and contributed generously to charity initiatives.

Caring for the Environment

Environmental performance was exemplary, supported by robust management procedures. The team focused on promoting positive environmental impact and worked with their supply chain to meet their net-zero targets. Their environmental awareness was evident in their use of media engagement to share their accomplishments.

Valuing the Workforce

The project team also championed exceptional on-site facilities and welfare initiatives. Satellite WCs, rest areas, and extensive staff training and development programmes illustrated their commitment. Fitness classes, wellbeing clinics, and ‘Town Hall talks’ were examples of the team’s focus on staff engagement. The team also fostered inclusiveness, supporting a sports development programme and planning a Women in Build event.
