St Lawrence SEND school – Lincolnshire

Willmott Dixon

Construction Project Overview

The project involves designing and constructing a new two-storey SEND school with associated parking, replacing an existing nearby facility. It also includes a sports pitch and landscaped areas. Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd has been awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the project in 2023. The site team consistently demonstrated high construction standards throughout the course of 2023, alongside positive environmental, workforce, and community practices that align with the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice.

Project Highlights

The project’s branding created a positive impression with clear signage and a well-organised site layout. The community was kept informed through regular updates, and the team worked to minimise disruption. The project demonstrated strong community engagement, particularly through its connection with a women’s refuge. This commitment extended to staff involvement, with a team member now serving as a trustee for the organisation. Environmental responsibility was evident through frequent audits and a focus on NetZero targets. Suppliers were encouraged to participate by providing their own NetZero plans. The project team also prioritised worker wellbeing. Clean welfare facilities promoted physical and mental health, reinforced by toolbox talks and the presence of mental health first aiders.

Innovations & Best Practices

The site team went beyond excellence by implementing a remarkable innovation and best practice. One team member initiated a powerful programme supporting domestic abuse survivors at a women’s refuge. This involved workshops, mentorship, discussions and even an innovative garden renovation project supported by donations and volunteer efforts. The project benefited survivors and potentially opened doors to future careers in construction for some.

Respecting the Community

The team worked closely with the adjacent school to minimise disruption during construction. Regular updates were provided to local residents through various channels, and personal feedback was actively encouraged. The project also included plans promoting construction as an industry, alongside numerous communication initiatives designed to maintain positive community relationships. The social responsibility plan, which included input from the supply chain, highlighted the ongoing support offered to a local women’s refuge.

Caring for the Environment

The company’s occupational health, safety, environment, and quality assurance department conducted regular environmental management audits. Their impressive NetZero plan was prominently communicated to the workforce. Suppliers were also integrated into the NetZero plan, with their sustainability plans assessed during prequalification phases.

Valuing the Workforce

The company placed a high value on workforce and welfare policies. Employees benefited from clean welfare facilities and information on equality, inclusion, and wellbeing distributed through toolbox talks. The presence of two mental health first aiders reinforced the commitment to wellbeing. Safety remained at the forefront, with regular procedures and site audits ensuring exceptionally high standards were met.

Congratulations to the team for these outstanding performance levels.
