Industry mascot, Ivor Goodsite, 8 years on…

July 2010

The original character of Ivor Goodsite was developed in 2002 by the Considerate Constructors Scheme. Three simple images were created to visually depict “Yes”, “No” and “Maybe” for instructional communications. The following year he was brought to life via two specially designed costumes imported from Canada and he was launched at National Construction Week of that year, greeting MP Jackie Smith. During the event the character proved particularly successful with the many children attending for possible career interest. Even at this stage it was clear that there was great potential for expanding Ivor’s activities, not only as a tool to educate young people about construction but to also warn them of the dangers of playing on construction sites.

To help promote Ivor and his messages, he received his own website that same year and the scene was set. An early co-operation was with Blue Peter presenter Simon Thomas, swiftly followed by the completion of a half-marathon on behalf of contractors Taylor Woodrow. More events followed including the staging and judging of children’s poster competitions, appearances on carnival floats and participation in the ‘Big Sunday’ event to promote the Olympic Games.

By 2007 his increasing popularity demanded the acquisition of three further costumes, and the creation of children’s fun packs to support his many school appearances. Visits to children’s wards in hospitals on behalf of contractors followed, and 2007 was capped by an appearance on HTV’s 6 o’clock news while supporting Britcon.  With the diary for 2008 getting increasingly busy the total number of costumes was increased to 10 to cope with demand.

Edward Hardy, Scheme Chief Executive comments: “Whilst we always had high hopes for Ivor, we never imagined he would become quite so popular. However, we are delighted with the character’s success and believe that his messages are extremely valuable both in safety terms and in encouraging young people to consider construction as a career”.

With a brand new Ivor Goodsite website just launched, a further two costumes acquired, and a bulging diary, the character goes from strength to strength. With over 100 events attended so far in 2010, he aims to break 2009’s appearances record with ample time to spare!
