The new e-learning module follows on from the success of the Scheme’s ‘Spotlight on… plastics and packaging’ campaign which was published in February 2019 and has been viewed more than 10,000 times. The campaign includes statistics relating to the industry’s reliance on plastics and packaging, relevant case studies from construction companies, and guidance on how plastic pollution can be tackled. This new e-learning course aims to further increase the industry’s understanding of the need to reduce its consumption of plastic.
Despite the environmental risks associated with plastic, the construction industry is reliant on it within its everyday practices and is the second largest consumer of it in the UK. Therefore, it is vital that that the industry reconsiders the way in which it consumes and disposes of plastics and packaging to protect the environment and human health.
In addition to the new e-learning course, a follow-up article has been published. The ‘Spotlight on…plastics and packaging’ follow-up article provides an update on how the industry has responded to the campaign. This includes some new case studies from contractors relating to how they have reduced plastic waste, as well as the results of a survey carried out by our Scheme Monitors, which gives insight into what they have seen since the campaign was published. Our Scheme Monitors visit tens of thousands of construction sites and offices every year, providing them with a detailed understanding of industry attitudes and practices.
Once users have completed the e-learning course, they can take a short quiz to test their knowledge. All e-learning courses are free for registered Hub users.
